Department of Sociology of Religion focuses on relation between religion and social structure, and social institutions and processes. It examines religious groups, beliefs, acts of worship, and practices, as well as the changes observed in religious matters with the effects of various sociological conditions chronologically. It also records the characteristics and directions of these changes. The program aims to explain the basic concepts of Sociology of Religion deeply, to consider the relevant literature, and reflection of societal perceptions of religion, to provide an analysis of social and religious groups. Sociology of Religion embraces interdisciplinary scholarly approaches and cooperates with other human sciences. Hans Freyer, Mehmet Taplamacıoğlu, Mehmet Karasan, M. Rami Ayas, and Münir Koştaş are among the distinguished professors in the history of the Department.
